Pros & Cons

Pros & Cons

  • A Thermoplastic Polyurethane inner tube is more elastic and about 70% lighter than a standard Butyl inner tube.
  • An impressive 35 grams on the scale and just as puncture resistant as a Butyl inner tube!
  • This inner tube is also much more compact to carry and suitable for rim brake and disc brake wheels.
  • Make sure to replace this tube very carefully, as it would be a shame if your more expensive inner tube breaks before even using it..

Highly recommended if you want to make your wheelset even lighter without switching to tubeless.

- Sicco 9 August 2026

An extremely light and supple TPU inner tube, offering great comfort and a smooth ride when combined with the Pirelli PZero outer tyres.

Pros & Cons

Attractive black valves
Doesn’t deflate as quickly as latex inner tubes
Smooth ride
Super-light

Very fine inner tube, but too vulnerable at the connection of valve and tyre

- Martijn 6 May 2026

After fitting, I am very happy with the feel of the tyre and the extra comfort it provides. Unfortunately, the rear tyre has gone flat twice now, first after more than 3000 km, but the second time within 1000 km, not due to an external cause, but because cracks appear in the connection between the valve and the tyre. Apparently, this is a vulnerable spot.

Bit pricey, but then you have something

- Jacco 1 May 2026

I have particular experience with the Schwalbe Aerothan TPU inner tubes: I have ridden 6,000 km with them and zero punctures. However, they are no longer available with 80 mm valves. These are actually even lighter and smaller. This makes them really good to take with you as a spare. Fitting them is not very difficult or different: insert the valve, add a little air (not too much! 0.5 bar max), fit them neatly and fit the outer tyre (be careful not to get the inner tube in between). Then inflate and you're there. They are a bit pricey, but you can enjoy them for quite a few km with a bit of luck.

fast and light tyres of reliable quality

- Gijs 22 April 2026

Very good inner tubes. They are fast and light. Been riding about 2500km on my first pair and am very satisfied. 0 punctures and contrary to what I read here and there, they stay at pressure just fine. After about 5 days, maybe 0.1/0.2 bar has escaped, but that is a matter of re-pumping before your ride. Valves do tend to rattle in the rim, which I solved with a bit of insulating tape, which is why they get 4 stars from me, also because 20 euros per tyre is quite expensive.
